A work of art that adorns a home library rather than a wall. Edward Cooper was a prominent Los Angeles divorce attorney, once seemingly invincible (at least to the author) but now sinking into dementia, whose constant philandering was hardly a secret from his sons (or presumably, his wife). Most of the journey he naviagated by being told where to go next by locals. The Dog chapters are hilarious to both dog-lovers and cat-lovers (AKA dog haters). Then he led them through the rest of the Siegfried Line and into Germany.

Sometimes the tone is a bit scholarly, discussing the work of other theologians. This is a pity for the book is, however well meant, deeply unreliable as an historical source. There is a lovely high school picture of Sybil at the end of the book, revealing her charismatic smile and intelligent eyes. Due to international copyright, availability and pricing may vary outside of the US. She observed how boys from richer families would often remark, in a casual fashion, of her ‘side of town,’ and although they didn’t mean to be cruel, she felt the comments keenly.
